Scarce French Military Model 1842 Naval Pistol

Up for sale and just acquired is this scarce small military pistol made for the French navy in the mid part of the 19th century. This appears to be an original French Model 1842 Navy percussion pistol (Pistolet de Marine Modèle 1842) manufactured at the Royal Arsenal at Mutzig (Manufacture Royale de Mutzig) in Alsace. These are considerably scarcer than the French Army Model 1822 pistols and are highly desirable to collectors of French military arms.
Historical Background
The French Navy adopted the Model 1842 as an improved version of the earlier Model 1837 Navy pistol, which had been France's first percussion military pistol. The Model 1842 retained the same compact, handy proportions but incorporated minor improvements, including better sights and strengthened stock details after experience with the earlier model. These pistols served aboard French warships, at naval dockyards, and with French Marines throughout the mid-19th century, including the period of the Second Republic and the Second Empire.
Unlike the much larger Army cavalry pistols, the naval model was intended to be:

• Compact enough for boarding actions
• Convenient for officers and sailors in confined spaces
• Rugged enough to withstand salt-water service

The lock inscription in script reading "Mre Rle de Mutzig" ("Manufacture Royale de Mutzig") is one of the more attractive French arsenal markings.
Mutzig was one of France's principal government arms factories during the Restoration and July Monarchy. It produced muskets, pistols, and other military arms before production eventually shifted largely to Saint-Étienne and Châtellerault later in the century. Arms from Mutzig are encountered less frequently than those from Tulle or Saint-Étienne, making them especially interesting to collectors.
The dimensions as follow that fit the naval pattern well:

• Overall length: approximately 9½ inches
• Barrel: approximately 5 inches, round
• Original steel ramrod
• Single-shot percussion ignition
• Walnut stock
• Military iron furniture

The fact that the pistol remains completely original is especially important. Many surviving examples have replacement ramrods or nipples, or have been cleaned aggressively. Overall very sound condition with sharp markings. The wood is also sound however there is some unusual staining of the varnish left side opposite lock the cause of which we were unsure but does not detract from the overall pleasing appearance of the scarce pistol.
An original Model 1842 Navy pistol is much scarcer than French Model 1822 Army pistols , converted flintlock pistols, or Belgian export military pistols.
