Early 1800s Style Pistol Used for TRADE w/ NATIVES

Here we present an antique North West Company Marked Percussion Trade Pistol, made circa the early to mid-1800s. After the British takeover of New France, the North West Company (NWC) was established in Montreal, largely by newly arrived Highland Scots who formed several partnerships that combined to form the North West Company in 1779-1784. Building on the French fur trade expertise and voyageur labor, the new company quickly moved inland, far beyond the Great Lakes. Use of lightweight canoes allowed the company to compete with the Hudson Bay Company traders, held back by heavy wooden York boats and their reluctance to venture inland from their posts on the shore of Hudson Bay. Their enterprising spirit led them ever westward by the means of hardy voyageurs - portaging heavy loads, paddling through rough rapids, and persevering through harsh, isolated winters. By the 1790s, “Nor/Westers” had become leaders of the fur trade and had mapped much of what is now Northwest Canada.

Both the English and French governments sent thousands of these less expensive trade guns to the colonies in North America and the Caribbean to arm the colonists. These guns were also used to trade with the native peoples for furs and to gain military and trade alliances with them. Generally speaking, trade guns were of a lower quality and finish than the military firearms of that era and many were of questionable safety. Trade guns were usually of a smaller bore and lighter than the regulation arms of the period, however large bores such as this example were not uncommon.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. The crack on the left stock flat shows movement when light pressure is applied. Legible markings.
