D. EGG “HOWDAH” PERCUSSION PISTOL
Description:
A double barrel “Howdah” pistol, made by D. Egg of London. This large bore pistol was probably used in India or Africa, during the British Empire era, for defence against tigers and lions. It is scroll engraved with a gold inlay at the breech end of the barrel rib. “D. Egg” is inscribed on each of the pistol lock plates, and “D. Egg, London” on the top of the barrel rib. The barrels have a pleasant damascus finish, and silver bead sight. The checkered walnut stock has a small silver plaque in the back edge, two silver barrel key escutcheons and a percussion cap compartment with a hinged lid in the butt. The iron ramrod is intact.
Caliber: .65 percussion Overall Length: 14.50 Barrel Lengths: 8.30
Condition: Iron parts are good with traces of original finish – Barrels retain approximately 40% of the original damascus twist pattern finish – Wood is very good with much of the original finish remaining, and only minor losses of wood at the barrel edges – Ramrod swivel mechanism is missing but the ramrod appears to be original.
