EUROPEAN Early 1800s MAPLES Signed Antique FLINTLOCK .44 POCKET/BELT Pistol Likely made in the United States
Description: EUROPEAN Early 1800s MAPLES Signed Antique FLINTLOCK .44 POCKET/BELT Pistol Likely made in the United States Here we present an antique European Maples Signed Flintlock Pocket/Belt Pistol, made circa the early19th Century. This pistol would have been primarily intended for use as a self-defense firearm, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside, and could have possibly been carried as a “back up” into battle. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries in Europe, as well as the colonies that features a large .44 caliber bore that would have been worn on the belt or tucked away in a coat pocket. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy city of Liege, London, or Paris during the tumultuous times of the early-1800s. These type pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. The overall condition is good. Strong action, remains in its original flintlock configuration. Good bore for its age. The wood has a lightly carved floral design on the wrist with a thin split near the muzzle on the right/middle section of the forend. “MAPLES” is marked on the lock. Some of the gold remains atop the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 2-5/8 inches. Caliber: .44 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos.
