Here we present an antique Engraved and Carved Percussion Conversion Pocket Pistol, made circa the late-1700s in France. This pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to the more reliable percussion system as the new technology was developed.
This medium bore pistol would have been used primarily as a self-defense weapon. It is very much like the European equivalent of American Henry Deringer’s pistol. Their effective range was short, and they were frequently used as an adjunct to a sword. Pistols in this era were usually smoothbore, although some rifled pistols were produced. They came in a variety of sizes with the smallest being less than 6 inches and the largest ranging to over 20 inches. The smaller ones, such as this one, would fit into a typical pocket or a hand warming muff and could easily be carried by women.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is clear, smooth, and remains in good shape. Solid stock/grip, contains less than expected handling/storage wear. Wire inlays remain intact. This example is lightly engraved.
