French Percussion-Converted Coat Pistol by F. Mercier
Description:
An exceptional percussion conveted high quality pistol by F. Mercier, with high quality appointments..About . 64 cal, with a 8'' part round part octagon barrel with turned medial at the point of transition and an oxidized bore. The barrel of this pistol has mostly toned to gunmetal gray patina showing some sparsely scattered areas of old light pitting and streaks of bright blue finish here and there. The breech shows a ''(Crown) / FM'' maker's touch mark., and a lion symbol. The banana-shaped convex lockplate shows a pronounced teat at the rear and is now equipped with a nipple protector in lieu of the frizzen. The lock has mostly toned to gray showing some remnants of silvery case-hardening along the hammer and the maker markings in the center are very faint. The pistol is equipped with a curlicue trigger and the balance of the hardware is brass mostly toned to ocher and showing some overall light dings, handling marks and a small void through the buttcap. The sideplate features some light border embellishments and the buttcap features a rather nice lion-like grotesque mask of high quality early guns. The smooth walnut stock with horn tip remains in about very good condition showing remnants of oil finish, there is a repaired u-shaped crack at the upper tang and a number of thin cracks scattered along the left side forward of the stock flat and along the grip, but they are solid and not opem.The base of the grip is a little shy of the buttcap and there is some insect damage along the left side of the horn tip. What appears to be the original ramrod is present and the lock seems to function well mechanically. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
