HUGE 6 Bore Percussion Howdah Pistol Charles Curry San Francisco California - Massive .93 Cal Elephant Backup Gun *RARE*
Description: Incredibly Rare Charles Curry, San Francisco, California Retailed Massive 6 Bore Percussion "Howdah" Pistol, .93 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1852-1863. This is by far the largest caliber pistol we have ever seen in all our years of collecting. Typically Howdah pistols were made for personal defense against tigers while on the hunt but I think it's clear this pistol was intended stop anything in it's tracks that a Victorian hunter might encounter - even a rogue elephant! It was made in England likely by the firm Moore & Harris and retailed by Charles Curry of San Francisco. The pistol measures 12 3/16" long and weighs exactly 3 lbs. The Birmingham proofed barrel measures 6 1/2" long and 1 7/16" wide across the breech. It is fitted with a silver bead front sight and is struck with the maker's initials "M&H" along with bore/gauge size "6". Inside diameter of the bore measures approximately .935". Serial number "4161" is marked on the barrel, hook breech, and stock. The lock is inscribed "CHAs CURRY / 87 BATTERY St. S.F. CALa" and a bold number "1" is engraved on top of the breech and barrel tang. The metal has a lightly textured appearance overall with heavier surface pitting scattered along the right side of the barrel toward the muzzle. The lock, barrel, and triggerguard have been coated in a black "Japanned" finish which was popular among sea service pistols of the day. The iron backstrap, buttcap, and wedge escutcheons have been polished bright and varnished. The stock features a finely checkered grip with turned butt and massive horn forend tip. There is no provision for a ramrod which is a feature commonly seen on 6 and 4 bore Elephant guns from this era that were intended to be carried solely for backup and loaded by porters. The wood has had a coat of varnish added and retains a rich attractive color. Other than a tight 1 1/2" crack below the forward tip of the lock the wood remains in great condition without further issue. Long 6 3/4" barrel tang with large spurred triggerguard and round buttcap fitted with a lanyard ring. The tip of the hammer spur has broken away and is missing. The action is remarkably strong and crisp and functions perfectly. Original nipple is intact without damage. This is an extreme rarity and a 'must have' for any big bore collector - you will not see another!
