Large Continental Revolutionary War Period Flint Lock Pistol Possibly French or Dutch
Description: Nice and untouched condition. Retains a pleasing patina overall. 12 1/2 inch barrel. Approximately .65 caliber. Wood is sharp with nice pronounced grain to it, there is a minor crack on the left side from one of the lock screws being over tightened, a common occurance. Brass mounted. Has No. 4 engraved on the butt. Does not appear to have any other markings. Based on the curvature of the lock and overall style, we date this from the mid to late 1700's. It seems to be of French or possibly Dutch style, although more along the lines of the French pistols of the time. There is a piece of wood missing from the right side towards the front of the lock. Mainspring was most likely period replaced as there are two additional holes in the lock plate. The hammer holds and works, however it's soft, keep in mind, this thing is over 200 years old! Roughly 19 1/2 inches long overall. Missing the ramrod. This recently came to us out of a local estate here in Oyster Bay on Long Island which was made famous by the show TURN: Washington's Spies featuring Robert Townsend who lived and operated right here in the same town during the Revolution!
