Little Used Colt Model 1849 5 Shot .31 Caliber Revolver Made In 1853. Great Condition.
Description:
The first Colt trigger guard revolvers were massive in size and weight. Starting with the Colt Walker, tipping the scales at 4.4 pounds, it was followed by the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Model Dragoons (and several variations) which still took hefty arms to shoot accurately. Seeing the need for a lighter and more compact pistol, in 1848 Colt came out with the Baby Dragoon, a much smaller version of the earlier pistols mentioned above. Most were made without a loading lever and all had a square-back trigger guard. About 15,500 were made between 1847 and 1850. This gun must have been a huge success because in 1850 Colt stopped making it and started making the model we are selling today, the Model 1849 Pocket Model. The 1849 was very similar to the Baby Dragoon except that it had a rounded trigger guard and a loading lever. Ours is a quite early example with serial number 67,779 indicating manufacture in 1853. The caliber is .31 and the barrel length is 6 inches with a 5 shot cylinder. The barrel is stamped: {Address Saml Colt/New York City}. Some of these pistols saw heavy use, especially since many 1849s saw action in the Civil War. Usually, all the silver plate on the straps and trigger guard is gone, the cylinder scene is worn and no blue is left at all. NOT THIS ONE! Ours retains lots of finish. I would estimate that at least 85% of the silver plating remains with almost no brass showing through. The barrel retains a good 60% blue, mainly from the muzzle back and the “stage coach robbery” scene on the cylinder is very sharp and with a some blue remaining. All the safety pins are intact. All serial numbers match. When I removed the barrel to check the bore, I almost couldn’t believe it. It looks almost unfired, bright and shiny with no pitting and sharp rifling.
