Description: ORNATE All-Metal FLINTLOCK PISTOL from the MEDITERANEAN Antique Gorgeous Craftsmanship! Here we present an antique All Metal Mediterranean Flintlock Pistol, made circa the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century. Pistols like these were commonly used around the Mediterranean in this era. It is adorned throughout with Niello accents and features bird motifs. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulfur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. It hardens and blackens when cool, and the niello on the flat surface is polished off to show the filled lines in black, contrasting with the polished metal around it. This would have been like those weapons carried by Tripolitan pirates when the young United States sent the Marines to take care of them. This is a large pistol used for fighting but it was also a status symbol with its intricate engravings throughout the entire pistol. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape. Two unusual proofs marks can be found on the left side of the barrel. Every time you look at this pistol, there is something new to find! Own the original!
