Synopsis:
Extraordinary Passler & Seidl 1887 Ring Trigger Repeating Pistol, an exceptionally rare 19th Century Austrian firearm that served as a transitional bridge to semiautomatic handguns. Competitor to the Volcanic, Bittner, and Schulhof, this beautifully restored and all-matching clip fed example, SN:40, is one of only 150 pistols assembled, virtually all different, with a G bore and correct manual function. ANTIQUE!!!
Description:
Incredibly scarce Passler & Seidl Model 1887 repeating pistol, SN:40, made in Austria, cal. .32 Short Revolver (7.7mm), one of very few ring trigger repeating pistols made in the 1880s that served as a transitional bridge to semiautomatic handguns. Similar in concept to the Volcanic, Bittner, and Schulhof, the Passler & Seidl series of largely experimental guns was covered in depth in "Vom Ursprung der Selbstladenpistole" (The Development of the Self Loading Pistol) by Motz and Schuy, pages 82-96, with closely configured SN: 49 pictured on page 93. This clip-fed pistol has a 5.75-inch barrel with fixed front and rear sights. The top of the receiver is marked with a four-line address: WELT/ PATENT/ PASSLER & SEIDL/ WEIN. The left side of the barrel is marked "GUSS-STAL-L" with the serial number "40" clearly visible on frame, barrel, follower lever, trigger, bolt head, and other mechanical components. Checkered walnut grips secured with single transverse screw. Original lanyard ring present. "72" in blue/red painted, likely an inventory number, on bottom of left grip. ANTIQUE.
Condition:
EXC as professionally refinished, now with at least 97/98% rust blue/straw, flat planes, and well preserved markings. Comparable condition grips with added finish over handling marks but no suggestion of re-checkering or repairs. Bore slightly frosted with shallow pitting over easily visible rifling. Correct manual mechanics. An opportunity to add an incredibly scarce and important European repeater pistol to your collection!
