New Model Remington Navy Conversion (Engraved)
Description: The Navy would not convert its post-Civil War Remington revolvers until the White patent expired in 1875. The Navy was interested in altering its existing Remington’s and inquired about this on July 26, 1875, to which Remington made an offer. Remington would eventually alter about 1,000 Navy revolvers of all types in 1876 and 1877. The original serial numbers were retained, and alteration assembly numbers were added. The Navy did not re-inspect any of these altered pistols. This gun, serial number 30792, and alteration number 225 was one of the 1,000 guns altered by Remington. The numbers appear under the barrel and on the edge of the left grip frame and attest to use by the Navy. The gun is unusual in that it has engravings (factory ?) on both sides of the frame - below the cylinder, and behind the recoil shield. It is fully functional and mechanically sound. The finish is good, there are no nicks or dings, but it could use some cleaning. The walnut grips have been varnished. A nice addition to a Remington or Navy collection.
