RARE Antique WILLIAM TRANTER Single Shot .230 Rimfire SMOOTHBORE Pistol .230 Caliber for Use Indoors!
Description: RARE Antique WILLIAM TRANTER Single Shot .230 Rimfire SMOOTHBORE Pistol .230 Caliber for Use Indoors! Here we present an antique William Tranter Patent Pistol, made circa 1880 in London, England. William Tranter (1816-1890) was a British gunmaker and gun designer famous for inventing the Tranter revolver. Tranter is best known in American firearms collecting for the revolvers that were imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. However, this is an example of his tip-down barrel, breech-loading, single shot pistol. It is chambered for .230 Rimfire and is a smoothbore. This would have been a parlor or saloon pistol. Salon or saloon pistols came into fashion in the mid-19th century, where they typically featured heavy barrels and were chambered in a small caliber. They were used for target shooting in homes with a dedicated parlor or gallery for this purpose. Other guns of this type include “Gallery Guns”, “Flobert Guns”, “Saloon Guns”, and “Parlor Guns”, all designed for recreational indoor target shooting. These guns were developed in 1845, when French inventor Louis-Nicolas Flobert created the first rimfire metallic cartridge by modifying a percussion cap to hold a small lead bullet. These games were popular in saloons, at carnivals, and as mentioned above, in people’s homes during this period. This one bears Birmingham proofs on the bottom along with “SMOOTH BORE”. Beautiful highly polished blue finish on the barrel and case colored frame. Two markings—perhaps a foreign language—are hand engraved on the left side of the frame. One is in the likeness of an anchor, with the other resembling the number “9”. Automatic extractor when the barrel is opened. The overall condition is fine. Fantastic blue and light case colors. The action is strong. The bore is shiny bright and smooth. The grips are in great shape. A lovely piece from William Tranter! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-7/8 inches. Caliber: .230 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1975 #20513 SOLD Antique: Yes |
