BEST PRICED SOUTHERNER IN THIS CONDITION YOU WILL FIND!!
This is an early Southerner from Brown Manufacturing Company - serial #829. This antique derringer was manufactured between 1868 and 1869, shortly after Merrimack Arms of Newburyport, MA was acquired by Brown MFG.
FFL not required.
As a native of Newburyport, I have a small collection of these little turn-barrel pistols and this one is very clean. The mechanics are all functional. I have disassembled it and taken pictures from all angles, both assembled and disassembled. I am also including a copy of the Brown Manufacturing Company booklet that came along with the gun.
The walnut grips are original with #829 on each one. All numbers of this pistol match. The markings are clear on the barrel, but like most Southerners, the finish has been worn off. The checkering on the hammer is still in very good condition. There is typical pin-prick pitting on the barrel, but it is smooth to the touch. The internal of the barrel shows some crusty rust typical of pistols of this era (not used for NRA grading). I believe this was carried for years. There are no visible cracks to any of the metals.
The Merrimack Arms building was constructed on Merrimack Street in Newburyport to build rifles and derringers. Brown and Merrimack Arms pistols were virtually identical. Brown took over the manufacturing is 1869, which dates #829 in the 1868 - 1869 timeframe. The name “Southerner” was Merrimack Arms marketing idea to appeal to buyers south of the Mason-Dixon line.As with most all Southerners, it was pocket or purse carried, and shows even wear as a well-used pistol. It was designed for 41 caliber rim fire ammunition.
