This is a very nice English gentleman's pistol by Richards. As there are well over 30 Richards listed as English gunmakers, we are unable to further identify which particular Richards made this pistol. The overall length is approx. 14.5"". The 9"" round 56 caliber has a good smooth bore with light roughness toward the muzzle. The barrel has a bright gray patina. There are two indistinct proof marks and light engraving is visible at the breech and tang. The lock and cock have a smooth gray-brown patina. The center of the lock is engraved RICHARDS. There is an edge line around the lock and cock. The brass ramrod pipes, trigger guard, side plate, and oval blank escutcheon at the wrist are fine. The trigger guard has an acorn shaped finial and a flower engraved on the bow. The stock is very good with sharp edges and light wear. There is an old age crack just below the frizzen spring screw to the trigger guard. The grip form is of the Wogdon style. The action functions correctly. This very nice example of an English gentleman's pistol would fit a flintlock pistol or English pistol collection.
