Description:
1781-1804 Mfr. MELCHIOR BAKER of PENNSYLVANIA Flintlock OFFICER’S Pistol

From GEORGES TOWNSHIP in FAYETTE COUNTY, PA

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Melchior Baker Flintlock Officer’s Style Pistol. Melchior Baker of Georges Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania was an active gunmaker between circa 1781-1804. He teamed up with Albert Gallatin to start an arms factory, crafting broadswords and muskets for both state and national governments. When Gallatin joined Thomas Jefferson's cabinet as Treasury Secretary in 1801, he stepped away from the gunmaking business, selling his stake to Baker. Baker kept the factory running with help from his sons. Eventually, the factory shut down once the government armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry ramped up mass production.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Arms Procurement Act of 1797 authorized the procurement of 20,000 muskets specifically to arm the States Militia, of which 19,900 were contracted to fifteen gunmakers. Albert Gallatin become one of those contractors, assigned to produce 1,200 muskets. Since Gallatin was not a gun maker at the time, he subcontracted to Melchior Baker, a gunmaker in his district and the only contractor located west of the Allegheny Mountains. Albert Gallatin is perhaps one of the lesser known of our founding fathers, but he served an eclectic career in both public and private service. His roots ran deep in both the public and private sectors. He mostly helped to shape financial and foreign policies. Gallatin ended up serving the country as a Senator, House member, Secretary of Treasury under Jefferson and Madison, and being the Ambassador to France and Great Britian.

The overall condition is good. Original dark brown patina. Strong action. Reconverted to flintlock. The bore is good for its age. Markings are legible. The wood is solid overall, with a thin crack on each side of the forend/stock flat. Lightly engraved trigger guard. A portion at the front left tip of the forend is absent. This flintlock pistol features a roller frizzen and light engraving on the barrel tang, trigger guard and butt pommel.
