A wonderful example of the type carried by Hessian officers during the American Revolution. Hessians were German mercenaries hired by England to help fight against the colonies and were regarded as the most well trained and feared soldiers in the world. Their brutality was demonstrated at the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776 when American soldiers were cut down by the score while trying to surrender. The pistol is unmarked and measures just over 17" long overall. It features a 11 1/4" barrel which retains it's original low brass blade front sight. The lock features an unbridled pan and remains in original unaltered condition with the exception of the hammer which is likely a period replacement. Only it's form suggests this and if it is in fact a replacement it has undoubtedly been with the gun since it's wartime use. Overall the metal has an untouched dark plum/gray patina. The well figured stock is nicely carved and retains a beautifully worn and untouched finish throughout. Aside from a very sturdy old crack through the wrist and a couple old small edge chips the wood remains in great shape for it's age with no further issues. Original brass "grotesque mask" buttcap, sideplate, triggerguard, and ramrod pipes all have an attractive mellow color. The base of the entry pipe broke away long ago and was neatly filled with wood. The brass wrist escutcheon is an old replacement. Original horn nosecap and wood ramrod. The action features three clicks and functions flawlessly, very crisp and tight. The frizzen closes and springs forward securely. A fine and authentic Hessian officer pistol that will be a highlight among any collection.
