#2169 Allens Patent Boot Pistol, 34-caliber percussion
Description:
#2169 Allens Patent Boot Pistol, 34-caliber percussion single shot, 1837 patented and probably produced in the 1840s. Numbered in the 2XX range, but I’m pretty sure this is simply a batch number, not an actual serial number and marked on the underside of the 3” barrel. It is missing the triggerguard, but this can be easily made and installed, as they are very simple construction. It is also very possible that a reproduction guard will fit from one of the many kit guns available. Boot pistols were very common in the 1840s because they were so inexpensive and holsters were not in common use yet, so pocket and belt single-shots were the norm. The California Gold Rush in 1848-1852 saw gold panners using these in great numbers as protection from robbers and claim jumpers. They would tuck these in their high-top boots (some boots actually had built in holsters to accommodate these smaller guns) and when squatting to pan at the rivers edge, if the gold panner was jumped, he could very easily grab one of these out of his boot and let fly at close range. If not for the absent triggerbow, this is a better-than-average piece, VG+. $135
