1842 Aston pistol
Description: REDUCED. 1842 Aston. (#157) This is a Model 1842 Aston U.S. Contract Dragoon’s Pistol made in 1851 in Middletown, Connecticut. Henry Aston was a gunmaker from Middletown who received a government contract to produce 24,000 Model 1842 pistols in his first contract with the US gov’t which spanned from 1846-1850. In 1850, he received a second contract for an additional 6,000 units, all of which were produced in 1851-52. This pistol is from the 1850 contract. It has a lockplate marking of US/Aston & Co and behind the hammer MIDDTn/CONN/1851. Lock functions properly.. The wood is excellent even though it has no cartouche (either missed by inspector or not issued). Ramrod appears to have been replaced but the swivels are original. The ramrod is captive, so that it would not be lost in the heat of battle on top of a horse. The Model 1842 was the last single shot smoothbore pistol issued by the U.S. Army. Many of these were used, especially initially, by both sides during the American Civil War. Very affordable piece of American history. LEGAL: No FFL or C&R license is required!
