18th & 19th Century Germanic Gentleman’s Pistol

Here we present an antique Germanic Manstopper Pistol in .455 Caliber, made circa the late-1700s in Sulzbach, Hesse (near Frankfurt) by A. Ehlich. Belt-sized pistols like these were used to defend oneself when traveling or in public places. It is big enough to fight with, but not so large as to be cumbersome. This one was originally a flintlock and was updated to the more reliable percussion firing system circa the 1840s.

This is a quality piece and one can imagine that this pistol may have been purchased by a gentleman or a successful businessman. The hammer is engraved and the stock has a fore end tip of horn. Otherwise, there is simple but handsome brass hardware. This was a well-made working pistol for someone serious about his personal protection.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The lock reads “A. EHLICH”. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock is in great shape. A very neat piece from
