Antique HENRY ASTON & Co. U.S. Contract M1842 .54 Smoothbore Pistol DRAGOON 1851-52 Dated Percussion U.S. MILITARY Pistol
Description: Antique HENRY ASTON & Co. U.S. Contract M1842 .54 Smoothbore Pistol DRAGOON 1851-52 Dated Percussion U.S. MILITARY Pistol Here we present an antique Henry Aston & Company U.S. Contract Model 1842 Dragoon’s Percussion Pistol, made in 1851-52 in Middletown, Connecticut. This example has an 1851 lock and an 1852 barrel. Henry Aston, a Middletown gunmaker, produced 24,000 Model 1842 pistols under a 1846-1851 government contract, followed by an additional 6,000 in a second contract (1851-1852). Due to overlapping dates, it's likely from the second run. The Model 1842, the first official percussion pistol and the last large smoothbore single-shot pistol, served during a period of significant conflict and change, including the Mexican-American War and tensions leading to the Civil War. By 1845, it was the primary weapon replacing flintlock models, and marked the end of the U.S. Army's single-shot smoothbore pistols. The 1842 features sturdy construction with lots of brass for support. This was important during a time when one would expend their shots and still have a fight on their hands. Striking your opponent with the pommel of your gun was quite effective. The ramrod is captive, so that it would not be lost in the heat of battle on top of a horse. Many of these were used, especially initially, by both sides during the American Civil War. The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Original gray/brown patinas. Solid stock and grip with less than average wear. A thin crack is found on the stock at the left breech. This example has two cartouches on the left stock flat. Markings are legible. “1851” dated lock and “1852” dated barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1750 #250647 SOLD Antique: Yes |
