BEST ENGLISH Antique Joseph LANG Defensive Pistol
Description: BEST ENGLISH Antique Joseph LANG Defensive Pistol TWIST Two Barrel Double for the Streets of London! Here we present an antique Joseph Lang Double Twist Barrel Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa 1853 at the address that is engraved on the gun: “22 Cockspur St. London”. Joseph Lang was the forebear of a company that is still in business today, Atkin Grant & Lang. After apprenticing under the famous “best maker” Manton, Lang founded his own shop in Haymarket in 1821. Eventually he would move to the 22 Cockspur address in about 1853. A friend from his apprenticeship with Manton happened to be the also famous James Purdey, whose guns he sold from his shop. Lang went on to marry Purdey’s daughter Eliza in 1828. He had two sons, Joseph and James. Joseph Jr. went on to apprentice under Purdey and then go on to work for his father and carry on the family business. Lang Sr. is most remembered today for his adoption and promotion of the breech-loading gun in Britain. One of the legacies of his company is that they were responsible for the introduction of the .470 Nitro Express cartridge in 1907. This pistol was meant to be a self-defense pistol of high quality and craftsmanship. It features a percussion firing system with two barrels. Once the top barrel is fired, the user can place the hammer at half-cock and turn the barrels on their axis to select the other. The pistol is relatively small with short barrels that unscrew for loading, allowing a larger diameter ball to be used for a tighter gas seal (versus ramming a smaller ball down the muzzle), thereby maximizing the firepower of a small gun. The trigger also folds out of the way until the hammer is cocked, making it streamlined for a pocket. The pommel features a small trap for percussion caps. The hammer, frame and pommel are all very nicely engraved with decorative scroll as well as “J. Lang/22 Cockspur St/London”. The right side of the barrel cluster is proofed “Crown/V” and “Crown/P”. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 1-1/2 inches in length. Caliber: .45 percussion The bores are in very good condition and the action is excellent. Overall condition as seen in photos. Want to own a gun from one of the 19th century’s best makers? Look no further. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
