CASED PAIR of Engraved Antique JOHN VENABLE Percussion POCKET/BOOT Pistols Oxford, England Manufactured Circa 1850!
Description: CASED PAIR of Engraved Antique JOHN VENABLE Percussion POCKET/BOOT Pistols Oxford, England Manufactured Circa 1850! Here we present a cased pair of engraved John Venable Percussion Pocket/Boot Pistols, made circa 1850 in Oxford, England. These would have been the English equivalent of the American Deringer pistols (named for their inventor Henry Deringer). They are relatively small, single-shot pistols with large bores, in this case .48 caliber. A neat feature of these is that their triggers tuck up in to the frame until the hammer is cocked, bringing them down to a useable position. When you only had one shot, you had to make it count, so a large caliber was used. If you could carry one, why not make it two? A second gun was mighty handy, and many times they were sold in pairs. These pistols have octagonal barrels with a blue finish. The frame is brass and the grips are finely hand-checkered. Neat engraving on the hammer and frame. They are marked “VENABLES. OXFORD.” The label inside the case lid reads: “J. VENABLES,/(SUCCESSOR TO THE LATE MR. W. FIELD,)/GUN MAKER,/NO. 21, SAINT ALDATE'S STREET,/OPPOSITE CHRIST CHURCH,/OXFORD.” The case includes a cap tin, three-compartment flask, lead balls, a ball mold, and a wooden rod. The overall condition is nearing fine. The action is strong all around. The bores are in good shape. The checkering on the grips remain sharp. The barrels are tight and could not be removed easily. This set of wonderfully engraved pistols would be a great addition to the collection. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 3 inches. Caliber: .47 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2985 #200888 SOLD Antique: Yes |
