Josiah Ells Patent Double Action Pocket Revolver - MFG between 1857-58 - Pittsburgh, PA.-. This is a First Model Open Top Rare Round Frame. One of five (5) variations only of 625 first models manufactured! In total, only 1375 Ells were made mostly all flat frame with top frame construction. The gun has a 3" barrel. . The crisp hammer markings are ELLS PATENT on left side & Aug.1 1854 0N RIGHT SIDE. The frame has nice floral engraving with shields or crecents on both sides. The cylinder backstrap part of frame has engraving and the breech side of barrel has a small design. The right grip has a secure crack from top to btm, The left grip is excellent. Grips have steel (or silver) escutcheons at screws. .The action works perfectly tight. Ells later sold his company to J.M. Cooper in 1858. (Frank Sellers American Gunsmiths 2nd edition).
