ENGRAVED Antique BELGIAN French Style Large Bore “MANSTOPPER” Perc. Pistol
Mid-19th Century SELF DEFENSE Single Shot Pistol
Description: ENGRAVED Antique BELGIAN French Style Large Bore “MANSTOPPER” Perc. Pistol
Mid-19th Century SELF DEFENSE Single Shot Pistol
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved Liege Proofed French Style Large Bore “Manstopper” Percussion Self Defense Pistol, made circa the Late 1830s in Liege, Belgium. This single shot percussion pistol has a gaping .70 caliber bore. The barrel is 8-3/8 inches and fully octagonal. It has a small fixed notch sight on the barrel tang. The front sight is a small bead. The stock has a fluted pistol grip and the pommel is equipped with a lanyard ring. The trigger guard has a rest for the middle finger.
This example features light engraving with brass furniture and a back action lock. This large bore gun would have been quite the deterrent against ne’er do wells while traveling the countryside or walking in the busy streets in Liege, Paris, or London during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Original patinas. The bore is smooth and remains in good shape for its age. A thin grain split is present on the left forend at the nose, hairline crack to the left of the side screw, and a small crack just to the right of the barrel tang. Nicely checkered grip. Lightly engraved lock and hammer. Liege proofed right barrel flat.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
