Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Peanut Size A.J. Plate Attributed Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Percussion Pocket Pistol, made by Slotter & Company circa 1858-60. Herman Adolph Joseph Plate was San Francisco’s most famous 19th Century arms dealer and secured his place in history when he lost a patent infringement lawsuit over the infamous Deringer pistol. President Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed with one of Henry Deringer’s pocket sized percussion pistols, the night John Wilkes Booth revenged the South at the Ford Theater. Henry Deringer was a very successful Pennsylvanian gunsmith who started his own company in his early twenties, circa 1809. It was not until the 1850s that his prototypical “Deringer” percussion pistol became extremely popular. The Deringer was popular because it was lightweight and compact. To compensate for its single-shot capacity, users often carried a pair that sold for around $25 total, including a custom calibrated bullet mold. But Henry Deringer neglected to patent his gun and before long there were copycats.

One particular suit, Deringer vs. Plate, was brought against the buyer is this gun, the San Francisco dealer, A.J. Plate, which went all the way to the California Supreme Court. According to Norm Flayderman, Plate was the foremost distributor of well-made copies of Henry Deringer’s pistols, actually made by Slotter & Co., also of Philadelphia. Slotter & Co. which was comprised of former employees of Henry Deringer, who copied his design, including his name and markings on their products. At one point, the company even hired a man, a tailor no less, so that they could use his name, which was John Deringer. As you can imagine, if aesthetics alone weren’t enough to convince most buyers that it was a Deringer, putting that name on there might be ticket. The court sided with Henry Deringer to defend his trademark in a decision that set a precedent and has been frequently cited in legal works.

The overall condition is good. Some traces of original finish in low trafficked areas. Strong action. The bore is good for its age. Smoothed grip checkering. The wood is solid with average wear and light chipping on some edges. The number “1” is marked on the trigger guard tang.
