Gantinne – Renette Sidelever Breech Loading Percussion Target Pistol
Description: This fabulous pistol was produced in France by the world renowned percussion pistol maker Gantinne-Renette. This example is a Sidelever Single Shot Target pistol, approximately 1870-80’s in .44 caliber Russian with blued steel trigger guard, fine floral scroll engraving, case hardened breach with fabulous matched floral scroll engraved details, walnut frame with deep checkered grips and case-hardened butt-cap, blued 10-1/4 inch fluted octagonal barrel with engraved details. Top engraved "GASTINNE RENNETTE A PARIS,". A truly fabulous piece of exceptional quality and condition sure to be the star in anyone's antique firearms collection. Pristine mint condition throughout. In car terms this would have been the "Bugatti" of its day. In "The Art of Wing-shooting", Leffingwell, 1895, the author states that Annie Oakley owned two single-barreled pistols made by this celebrated maker. These pistols had 14-inch barrels and were made expressly for pigeon shooting. With them Miss Oakley scored nine out of ten pigeons from two traps, using one-half ounce of shot. Guns of this type were also used in simulated dueling competitions using wax projectiles at the Gastinne-Renette Gallery in Paris. Noted shooting expert Chevalier Ira Paine was awarded the Grand Medal d'Or on many occasions at these annual events. Gastinne-Renette pistols were displayed at the Exposition Universelle of 1855 by Louis-Julien Gastinne-Renette (1812-1885) where his firm won a first-place medal. Napoleon III wanted the fair to demonstrate French superiority over the British in the arts and industry following the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, and one category in which the French regularly triumphed over their British counterparts was in highly ornate arms. Gastinne-Renette was Napoleon III's gunmaker and that of the Spanish Royal Family and was among the most renown makers of dueling and target pistols in the 19th century and continued to offer proper dueling training into the 20th century. The firm won multiple awards at the large French and international exhibitions of the 19th century. Examples of their works of art were also loaned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from the Dr. Gerald Klaz collection (L.1991.70.4) and on display starting in October 1991 in the then newly renovated Arms & Armor Galleries. A pair of Gantinne-Renette percussion pistols that were on display at the Exposition Universelle of 1855 recently sold (December 5, 2020) at the Rock Island House. The pre-bid estimate was $50,000-$70,000, the final selling price was $115,000!!! This is indicative to the fact that the value of this type “hard asset” is on an aggressive growth path.
