This pistol was made by Joseph Kirner of Pesten, or the city of Pest, who was the Royal Court Armorer of Emperor Franz Joseph of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Kirner generally produced SxS shotguns which are highly engraved and made extensive use of gold inlay. He did produce pistols from time to time and is known to have made a pinfire revolver at one point. Pest was at that time an individual city on the east side of the Danube river in Hungary. On the west side of the Danube lay the cities Buda and Obuda. The three cities united in 1873 to form what is today Budapest, the capitol city of Hungary. This caplock pistol has a few interesting features. Both bores use straight rifling. This would only provide a modicum of accuracy for a short distance, which granted, is probably all the pistol was intended for. The barrels, starting from the line in front of the nipple cone, the barrels are 7.5 inches in length. The left hammer is bent over to the right, intentionally so, to provide easier access to a right handed shooter. Even the pistol grip itself is shaped to the right for a right-hand user. The bores have been slugged to check for diameter and both come out to 0.500 or 0.501 inches in diameter (measure of the slug and therefore groove diameter). The pistol is naturally set up with dual triggers. The front trigger operates the right hammer and the rear trigger the left. The barrels are Damascus steel. Most of the metal surfaces are fairly well engraved. Naturally, the bore and external surfaces exhibit some pitting. Firearms of the era naturally used black powder, which is very corrosive, especially against the steels available at the time, like Damascus steel. The front sight has been worn or polished down to the level of barrel’s surface. The wood exhibits some small dents, mainly on the bottom. A couple of cracks are beginning to form on the sides of the pistol butt. The loading rod is slightly bent at the rear. To reinstall it after removing it, it is best to hold the pistol vertical with the muzzle pointed skyward, and simply drop the loading rod into its storage recess, although some manual handling might still be necessary.
