Model 1842 USN Ames pistol
Description: 1842 Ames (#198) N.P. Ames U.S. Navy Contract Model 1842 “Box Lock” Pistol, in .54 caliber, made circa 1843 (1st year of production) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Only 2,000 of these were made by Ames. Most of these scarce pistols saw service through the American Civil War. This one was made just prior to the Mexican-American War. Unlike most martial pistols of its time, the hammer is mounted on the interior of the lock plate. It also features a captive swivel ramrod to avoid loss in the sea during boarding maneuvers. The Model 1842 saw service during a time of great change and increasing tension, as well as firearms innovation. This was the first official percussion pistol to be adopted by the U.S. By 1845 it was the primary weapon issued to the First and Second Regiment of Dragoons, replacing many of their Model 1836 flintlocks - just in time for the Mexican-American War. The Model 1842 was the last single shot smoothbore pistol issued by the U.S. The overall condition is very good with an even gray patina. The action is crisp and strong. The lock is clearly marked “N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS” with “U.S.N./1843” stamped vertically at the rear. The “1843” is much lighter than the rest of the markings. The bore is smooth and in nice shape with a replaced nipple. The walnut stock is in excellent condition for its age. There is no visible cartouche. The breech of the barrel is marked in four lines “USN/1843/JCB/P”. The first two lines are very light. The “JCB” is the mark of inspector Joseph C. Bragg, an 18 year civilian employee of the Ordnance Department. A very nice example of a scarce US Navy pistol! LEGAL: No FFL or C&R license is required!
