Rare Antique 2 barrel 40cal Percussion Breech loading Howdah type Pistol
Description: Very Rare Antique double barrel Percussion Howdah type Pistol. This pistol is a Very unusually piece. It is a large percussion pistol .40 cal (10mm) with an 8” rifled double barrel , a side loading breech box that is removed to load then reinserted to fire. There is only one beaded sight on the right barrel . One hammer. One trigger. BUT you can fire both barrel at the same time. The breech is removed as seen in the photos. You can load 1 and fire a single barrel or load 2 and fire both at the same time. The breech block has a touch hole in-between both chambers so the second chamber can ignite. They may have been used with powder and ball or some may be used with paper cartridges for faster loading I cannot find any proof marks or serial numbers anywhere on the gun so unable to determine who manufactured it ? Condition: 8” Bores show some pitting from black powder use, but still have very strong rifling . The barrel has faded to a nice antique gun-metal gray patina. The walnut stock appears to be in somewhat good condition with a few scratches , dent and a repair done to the butt section. The butt plate shows the obvious dents and scratches. Back in the day they were typically used to replace a hammer when one could not be found. Mechanically works as it should with a somewhat strong hammer spring. History of Howdah pistols, also known as "Tiger Howdah pistols" or simply "Howdah guns," are a type of large-caliber handgun that originated in India during the 19th century. The name "Howdah" comes from the Hindi word "hauda," which refers to a platform mounted on the back of an elephant used by hunters and travelers for protection against wild animals, particularly tigers. These pistols were specifically designed for self-defense against large and dangerous animals encountered during hunts or travel. They were typically double-barreled and had large-caliber smoothbore barrels, often chambered for larger cartridges. Some models even had rifled barrels for better accuracy. The design of Howdah pistols evolved over time to incorporate features for better handling and firepower. They were usually breech-loading, allowing for faster reloading compared to muzzle-loading firearms. Additionally, some models had swivel barrels or folding triggers to make them more compact and easier to carry on the Howdah platform. While primarily associated with India, Howdah pistols gained popularity among European hunters and travelers who visited the region. They were admired for their stopping power and reliability in the face of large, aggressive animals. Although they fell out of widespread use with the decline of big game hunting and changes in firearm technology, Howdah pistols remain a fascinating relic of a bygone era, prized by collectors and enthusiasts for their historical significance and unique design. As a collector's piece, this Pistol holds historical significance due to its association in firearms history and its representation of mid-19th-century firearm design and innovation. Its unique markings and features make it a desirable item for enthusiasts of antique firearms and collectors of historical artifacts.
