BAYONET Equipped Antique TRANSITIONAL Revolver
Description:
BAYONET Equipped Antique TRANSITIONAL Revolver
By English Smith Thomas Norfolk of Bury St Edmunds
Here we present an antique English Transitional Percussion Revolver with a Barrel Mounted Snap Bayonet, manufactured circa 1850 in England. Thomas Norfolk was active in Bury St. Edmunds from 1844-1855. His shop was located at 26 Angel Hill. Some of his work yet remains there in the Moyse’s Hall Museum in Suffolk.
This revolver is one of those that bridged the gap between early “pepperbox” revolvers—with large barrel clusters that acted as both chamber and barrel for each projectile—and more modern revolvers with a single barrel and cylinders in which each chamber simply contained the munition. This one is a double action only version with a bar shaped hammer. It is also equipped with a tiny daggerlike bayonet on the left side of the barrel, making it a bit more formidable if the 6 shots of .32 caliber ball didn’t do the trick. The top of the barrel is marked “NORFOLK BURY ST. EDMUNDS”. The barrel and each of the cylinder chambers are British proof marked.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have an even gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The grips are in good shape with a small chip on the left. The bore is in very good shape with sharp rifling. Two of the six percussion nipples are absent. The action is strong. Here is a very neat transitional double action revolver with a snap bayonet mounted on it!
