During the Spanish Civil War the Republican government established two factories within its territory to manufacture a copy of the Astra Model 400 (1921). The Republica Espanola factory was operated by a private firm in Valencia. Between 1937 and 1939 this factory produced approx. 15,000 pistols. The 5.75"" barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The top rear of the slide is marked 9M/M LARGO and the top front behind the front sight has the intertwined RE circular logo. There is a star inspection stamp on the right front of the trigger guard. The serial number is on the right rear of the frame. The RE logo is also stamped on the circular brass grip medallions and on the base tab of the magazine. The gun retains approx. 97% of its blue military finish. The vertically ribbed wood grips are fine with no cracks or chips. The gun has no import marks. The action functions correctly. If you collect Spanish or European military automatic pistols, this RE-produced Spanish Republican military pistol would fit right in.
