Auto-Ordnance Model 1911A1 World War II Commemorative Excellent Condition
Description: The Model 1911 is perhaps the most famous semi-automatic pistol ever made having a long and successful carrier in both military and civilian use. The 1911 and its cartridge, the famous .45 ACP, were designed by John Moses Browning to fulfill a requirement by the U.S. Army for a new service pistol which would also become the first semi-automatic to be officially adopted by the U.S. Army, replacing the M1909 revolver in .45 Colt in service. The 1911 proved to be one of the most reliable and durable semi-automatic pistols ever designed, successfully serving the U.S. Armed Forces through World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. This pistol is a special Auto-Ordnance model intended to commemorate America’s participation in World War II. One the left side of the slide the pistol is engraved with the words, “World War II Commemorative M1911A1 .45”. Below this are listed the three theaters the U.S. fought in – the European Theater of Operations (ETO), the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO), and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations (CBI). Also engraved on the left side of the slide are three sets of four stars and the Great Seal of the United States. The right side is not engraved which makes sense as the pistol was intended to sit in a display case. The smooth walnut grips feature medallions which feature the phrase “In Honor of World War II Victory”. The grip screws, trigger, hammer, safety, slide lock, and magazine release are plated in gold leaf. The pistol is in excellent condition overall, but exhibits some wear. The sides and bottom of the slide exhibit friction wear in the finish but the chamber and bore are extremely clean. The gold leaf on the hammer is also intact, so it is difficult to say with certainty whether this pistol has been fired since leaving the factory. Most likely the slide the slide was simply wracked a few times with the resultant wear shown in the pictures. This is usually where the first bit of wear appears on a pistol. There is also a slight bit of wear in the finish near the front of the slide right at the edge of the muzzle. The right hand grip panel has a spot were the finish has worn or flaked away. The magazine is a Colt product which oddly, has been drilled and tapped in two spots on the floor plate. The only reason that something like this would be done is presumably to attach some sort of rubber bottom attachment like those seen on Willson Combat magazines. A replacement magazine from Auto-Ordnance would fix the issue. The glass display case is nice but the padding and felt are not built for this pistol. The padding is too thick and leaves the pistol in contact with the glass. As can be seen, the display case also includes seven “silver” cartridges. These are of course dummy rounds intended for display only. The World War II commemorative pistol is somewhat rare. Some gun value books do not even list it.
