WEBLEY & SCOTT MODEL 1911 .22 LONG RIFLE WITH 9 1/4" BARREL, #130XXX, ONLY 1400 MADE IN ENGLAND 1911-1932.
Description: FIRST ONE OF THESE I'VE EVER SEEN AND ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL SINGLE SHOT TARGET PISTOLS EVER MADE! WEBLEY & SCOTT MODEL 1911 .22 LONG RIFLE WITH 9 1/4" BARREL, #130XXX, ONLY 1400 MADE IN ENGLAND 1911-1932. This pistol is about the same style and size of the standard Webley & Scott .32 ACP "Metropolitan Police" model auto pistol. It is thought that these were made as training pistols to go along with the autos used by the London Police at the time. It looks just like an auto pistol, but is a single shot with no provision or "well" for a magazine. In fact, the bottom of the butt on these unique pistols is cut for a shoulder stock. It is a simple mechanism in which one merely pulls the "slide" back, place a .22 LR cartridge in the exposed chamber, manually push the slide forward and fire the pistol (it cocks upon pulling the slide back). The slide is not spring activated and must be pushed forward. After firing, there is a knurled rectangular "button" on the top of the barrel just ahead of the frame that is actually the extractor. With the slide open, this extractor is pushed rearward to eject the fired case. There is s single safety lever on the right side that is in the fire position when up and safe when down. The left side of the frame is marked "Webley & Scott LTD. London & Birmingham" with the small W&S logo stamping. It also has a tiny crown over BV proof stamp on the top right rear portion of the slide and frame. The right side is stamped "22 RIM FIRE LONG" over "MADE IN ENGLAND." I believe this additional "Made in England" stamping indicates that this pistol was made for export. Overall, it retains about all the bright blue with bright hammer and trigger guard. Black checkered hard rubber grips are excellent and the bore is bright With British gun laws what they are, I would imagine that most of these interesting and finely made pistols were collected and destroyed. This one, probably because it was exported out of England, survived. Few were made to begin with, and it is doubtful that more than a small number of these can exist today. A great example of a great rarity!
