1855 Springfield pistol-carbine
Description: The Model 1855 pistol-carbine was intended to be used as a pistol on horseback and as a carbine on foot. It enjoyed a very short popularity as Colt came out with a number of shoulder stocked revolvers, hastening the obsolescence the Springfield pistol-carbine. Many were issued to the 1st & 2nd US Cavalry in the west. Total of 4,021 mfg. between 1855 and 1857. Cal. 58. Bbl. 12" round rifled barrel is fitted with a bridled steel ramrod. The rear of the barrel has "VP" and eagle head proofs. Tang is dated "1855" in front of a two-leaf rear sight. Integral blade front sight with 2-leaf rear sight graduated to 400 yards. A sling swivel is on the front band and a lanyard ring on the butt. The lockplate is dated "1856" behind the hammer and the "U.S. Springfield" on the forward portion is no longer visible. The lock is fitted with the Maynard self-priming device but is missing the primer pawl. Concave button-tipped iron swivel ramrod. All iron has a bright finish. Brass-mounted American walnut stock is solid showing signs of cleaning and refinishing. No inspector's markings are visible. The buttcap is stamped with assembly #4. All brass hardware has a primitive border stamped along the edges and is toned to a mustard yellow. CONDITION: Fair-good. LEGAL: No FFL or C&R license is required!
