Engraved ALLEN & THURBER Antique BAR HAMMER Percussion Double Action Pistol CIVIL WAR ERA American Single Shot Sidearm
Description: Engraved ALLEN & THURBER Antique BAR HAMMER Percussion Double Action Pistol CIVIL WAR ERA American Single Shot Sidearm Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Double Action Single Shot pistol made circa 1845 and continued through the end of the Civil War Era. These bar hammer pistols, also known as No.9 Single Shot Self Cocking Pistols, feature a distinctive bar-shaped hammer, operating solely in double-action. Primarily designed for self-defense, they exceled in close-range effectiveness. These pistols were intended to be carried in a pocket or tucked into one’s belt and due to the flat shape of the bar hammer, they could be pulled rapidly without the risk of getting stuck behind clothing. These pistols were one of the cornerstones of Allen’s business and boast a lengthy history of production. The pistols were available in several versions and frame sizes with calibers ranging from 28 to 36. The half-octagonal, half-round barrels of the screw-off type vary in length from 2 to 10 inches. Allen’s percussion pocket pistol was a popular pistol that was produced in Worcester, Massachusetts between 1845 and the 1860s. Ethan Allen was already a prolific inventor and successful businessman in the 1830s when he came up with this design. It’s a .36 caliber pistol with a revolving screw off fluted barrel and has factory engravings in a floral motif executed on both sides of the frame. Made from 1830-1865, Allen & Thurber’s pistols, including their pepperbox, enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first pistol. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history. The action does not function, due to a broken or missing mainspring. Dark patina. The frame is engraved. Solid grips with average wear. Markings are legible. The bore is in good shape with serviceable rifling. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/4 inches.
