This is a 1919 Colt 1911 U.S. Army "Black Army Edition". The "Black Army" is an unofficial collector designation for a variation of the classic Colt M1911 produced from May 1918 through early 1919. To drastically increase production for WWI, Colt used shortened manufacturing processes and a darker matte blued finish. Heart-shaped frame cutouts are a definitive identifier of the Black Army production run is a rough, un-milled "heart-shaped" cutout under the grip panels. Because so many original WWI M1911s were later refurbished, parkerized, or updated to M1911A1 standards by military armories during WWII, all-original "Black Army" pistols are extremely scarce.
