COLT SAA SINGLE ACTION ARMY ARTILLERY MODEL SN’s 5830/ 6902 et al. Custer Range for Springfield Armory Lots 6 and 7 to 7th.Cavalry/ Colt Letter/ Doc
Description: A fine specimen of a Custer range Colt SAA Artillery with 1881 style short cavalry holster. Serial numbers include 5830/ 6902 from Springfield Armory Lots 6 and 7 some of which were issued to the US 7th.Cavalry. In addition, some of the revolvers in these Lots were documented as issued to and found at the Custer battlefield site. There were 263 Colt revolvers from Lots 6 and 7 issued to the 7th.Cavalry for the Black Hills campaign. The records of Indian turn ins after the battle include two that were documented only 13 and 16 numbers away from the serial numbers included on this Artillery. The weapon history of the Custer battle is ever evolving and new facts come to light nearly every year. This one appears to have had a relatively easy life following Springfield Armory rework and conversion in 1903. Comes with Colt historical letter and an extensive historical research documentation. While I have used the highly regarded Kopec letters in the past they are apparently no longer available to the public as of last year without going through Rock Island sales. ** (Personally, I am a retired Army officer and, although it has been over 20 years ago, I spent 3 years doing research and historical studies with The U.S. Army Command and Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and have some experience in that area. Additionally, I have provided input to military displays in museums locally and have had a strong 50+ year interest and enjoyment in both researching and collecting a wide range of military weaponry. Between reference materials including Kopec, open source and some arsenal and military record information I decided to attempt to provide my personal review of as much information as I could gather on this and other Colt Cavalry and Artillery revolvers, and their development and use during the period of the Indian and Spanish American Wars. I have included the 11 page referenced research document with this revolver. While certainly not a Gold standard Kopec letter, it should provide some useful information and a historical perspective for the buyer.) This Colt Single Action Army presents as a typical one of mixed serial numbers and 5 ½” barrel cut down from the original 7 1/2” as originally manufactured by Colt and shipped to either Rock Island Arsenal or Springfield Armory. This Artillery model was modified and refurbished by Colt in 1903 and shipped to Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts for possible reissue following the Spanish American War/Philippine Insurrection. As Colt Office of Historian Beverly Haynes notes in her documentation letter of February 9, 2024, “the original records pertaining to this (and almost all early) revolver(s) were lost of destroyed many years ago. However, our records do indicate the return of this revolver for refurbishing and subsequent reshipment. It is of further interest to note that the majority of the revolvers received during this time frame had 5 ½” barrels. The refurbishing consisted of replacement of worn parts, exterior refinishing and reassembly.” There are no records readily available from Springfield Armory or the National Archives as to where this pistol was shipped or issued to, after inclusion in a group of 200 sent to Springfield from Colt on April 17, 1903. Examination reveals much of a refurbished blue finish overall with what appears as faint colors remaining on frame. Serial numbers present on the trigger guard are 5830, frame is 6902, backstrap is 93742, cylinder is numbered 1154 and loading gate is 1697. There is an A inspection mark on the cylinder for O.W.Ainsworth who was the inspector with Colt SAAs from 1873-1874. The barrel bottom and cartouche on the grip stock and grip bottom is marked RAC, Raynaldo A. Carr, inspector of .38 and .45 pistols with Colt 1889-1909. The 5 ½” barrel is marked Colts PT F.A. Hartford, CT. USA with an additional small inspector mark P above the RAC mark. A 1903 date is present above the grip stock cartouche. A strong U.S. martial marking is present on the left side of the frame below the cylinder. This pistol has the Colt black powder frame of early SAAs and, while not test fired, has good mechanical indications with four distinct audible clicks upon cocking. Trigger pull is light but functional. There is no visible rust on the surface or barrel. Turn marks on the cylinder indicate considerable use of that cylinder at some point. No further disassembly or inspection was done other than taking the cylinder from the frame. A martial US marked 1881 style leather belt holster of unknown provenance is with the pistol. It is Artillery length, worn but still serviceable, and marked with a Rock Island Arsenal stamping on the flap and what appears to be a DMK inspector stamping on the end of the flap. Records indicate an that inspector mark was used by David M. King Lt., USA who was working from 1898-1905. Shipping is $50 insured double boxed. Know your local laws.
