Colt Model 1902 Military Engraved, Rare, Shipped to Admiral Turner for Adm Draemel
WW11 Navy 38 auto with sword, hat, autographs Documentation
Description: Rare and well documented Colt Model 1902 military that was shipped to a future 4 star Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner on Feb 6, 1906 and presented to the company commander (future) Admiral Milo Frederick Draemel for his graduation from the US Naval Academy. The back strap is inscribed "MFD from his Youngsters". Youngsters refers to the 2nd year class at the Naval Academy - of which Richmond Kelly Turner, class of 1908, was a member. (Plebes, Youngsters, Second Class, First Class). The pistol shows wear, has ivory grips with "MD" (Milo Draemel) engraved as well a Billiken on the reverse apparently carved during Adm Draemel's sea duty in the Orient. Functions as it should. Listed in shipping records in W H D Goddard's book on Govt Models. Not the best looking 1902 but read the following history. Admiral Turner was an early naval aviator; naval planner; a student of Milo Draemel in the Naval War College in Newport RI were he studied war with Japan; accompanied FDR sailing to Halifax to meet with Churchill early in the war; was in Naval intelligence when he should have warned Pearl about Dec 7; commanded all amphibious landings in the Pacific during WW2 including Tarawa, the Marshalls, Eniwetok, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and more; was front and center at the signing at the end of the war with Japan; became a four star admiral; planned operation Olympic the final amphibious invasion of mainland Japan; occupied Japan post surrender; appeared at a Congressional committee investigating the attack at Pearl Harbor; and is buried directly next to Adm Nimitz and Halsey in California. Admiral (Rear) Milo Frederick Draemel graduated early at the Naval Academy in February1906 for the Navy needed officers for the Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet for circumventing the globe, remember "carry a big stick" serving on the battleship Wisconsin 1906-1908. Served on battleships until 1916, then staff of the battleship force 2 US Fleet, then in Washington for WW1 with the Code and Signal Naval Communications until 1921; commanded destroyers, attended War College and worked his way up to executive officer and commanded battleships. Draemel served on the staff of the Naval War College where he taught Adm Turner the problem of defeating Japan; commanded the flagship of the US fleet and in 1937 became the Commandant of Midshipmen Naval Academy; served as Commander Destroyer Battle Force at the time of Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941. Draemel became chief of staff and aide to Adm Nimitz then Commander Amphibious Forces Pacific Fleet on 31 December 1941 but was transferred in September 1942 as Commandant fourth district naval yards in charge of all ship building and repairs after disagreeing with Adm Nimitz and Halsey about the costly island hopping campaign in the Pacific preferring to bypass the Pacific Islands letting them "die on the vine" instead to attack Japan early and aggressively. Just think of the loss of lives that might have been saved by bypassing these jungle island campaigns. Documentation includes an historical Colt Archive letter and a detailed article published in the RAMPANT COLT - the official magazine of the Colt Collector's Association (CCA). The display with this pistol received an award at an annual show of the CCA. Multiple books including Adm Turner's 1278 page bibliography in two volumes, personal autographs, year books from the Naval Academy, medals, epulets, pictures... everything pictured plus some. Inscribed "MFD" period naval sword and tricorn beaver hat in excellent condition with Lt Commander epaulets in a box with hard to read tag, maybe Lt Commander M Draemel. Tons of research, magazines, articles, books, computer documentation about two of the most decorated admirals in WW2 especially the Pacific. Questions? Please ask. Offers? Shipping by my C&R. Pistol must ship to FFL or C&R if legal in your jurisdiction. I'll pick up shipping costs- pistol shipping fast. Paperwork/documents a little slower. Prefer certified funds. This is the real deal and I have 100% positive feedback both selling and buying here and on GB, RIA, eBay...
