M-1902 SPORTING AUTO PISTOL, .38 ACP, #8XXX, SHIPPED TO BROWNING BROTHERS, OGDEN, UTAH, 1905
Description: HISTORIC, DOCUMENTED VERY EARLY MODEL 1902 SPORTING AUTO PISTOL, .38 ACP, #8XXX, SHIPPED TO BROWNING BROTHERS, OGDEN, UTAH ON MAY 13, 1905! This was a very limited production very early full size Colt automatic pistol that followed the first auto, the Colt 1900, and only about 7,500 were made from 1903-1908. The 1902 Military Model was made in far more numbers and lasted from 1902-1929. This example has the correct "BROWNING'S PATENTS" of 1897 and 1902 on the slide and retains the correct magazine with the patent date of 1884 stamping on the bottom. This pistol is listed by serial number in the GOVERNMENT MODELS book by Goddard as having been shipped on may 13, 1905 to Browning Brothers who were located in Ogden, Utah. Obviously, John Browning designed these early Colt auto pistols and it is very possible he actually handled this exact pistol which was sold from his family shop 117 years ago. Additionally, this is a documented early western shipped Colt. In 1905 Utah most Colt buyers who wanted a holster sized handgun were choosing Single Action Armies and Bisleys or perhaps a big New Service double action revolver. It would have been a very savvy ahead-of-his-time shootist to choose one of the new-fangled auto loading pistols designed by Jonathan Browning and sold by Colt! This is an honest example that has seen western usage, but is solid and fully functional. The metal surfaces retain little original blue except in the more protected areas- around the grips, above the trigger guard and on the frame beneath the slide. Sights are original and unaltered. This is an early model with the slide serrations at the FRONT of the slide only. The round stub hammer retains traces of light case color on the sides. Grips are fine and not chipped or cracked. Mechanically excellent and tight with excellent bore. Interestingly, there are no safeties or slide catches/releases on this early auto. Just a half-cock on the hammer. A wonderful piece of western history directly associated with John Browning himself! SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: COLT Model: 1902 SPORTING AUTO Serial Number: 8XXX Condition: VG |
