Description: Scarce 1909 Mfr. COLT M1902 Semi-Automatic .38 ACP “MILITARY” Pistol C&R 1 of 18,068 Manufactured; Designed by JOHN BROWNING Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Colt Model 1902 Semi-Automatic “Military” Pistol manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1909. There were two models of the M1902 made, those being the “Sporting” model and the “Military” model. The Sporting Model was manufactured between 1902 and 1908 with a total of 6,927 pistols produced. Manufactured concurrently with the “Sporting” Model was the “Military” Model, as is this example, with a production run between 1902 and 1928 with a total of 18,068 pistols manufactured. The Sporting Model 1902 variant was slightly lighter and smaller than the military version, with a more rounded grip frame. In the period of 1902–1907 the Sporting Models still outsold the military models, 6,927 to 5,500 and when production of the Sporting Model ended in 1907, sales were still steady. Perhaps unexpectedly, with the end of Sporting model production, the Military Model sales actually began to decline until 1913, The Model 1902 is a semi-automatic pistol developed by famous American firearms designer John Moses Browning and produced by the Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in the early 20th century. The Model 1902 was not a new design, but rather an incremental improvement upon the nearly identical Model 1900 and would transition from the 1900 into three distinct but related pistols with the same action and cartridge, the 1902 Sporting Model, the 1902 Military model, and the 1903 Pocket Hammer model. The 1902 Sporting model was so similar to the 1900 that it continued the serial number range, while the 1902 Military Model featured a different serial range as did the 1903 Pocket Hammer model. The 1902 Military Model featured a square and lengthened grip frame with an additional round in the magazine, while the 1903 Pocket Hammer featured a shortened barrel and slide but retained the Sporting model grip frame. This example has “1” and “triangle/VP” marked on the left and “48” marked on the right of the trigger guard, a casehardened spur hammer, lanyard loop, and a brass firing pin. It is fitted with a pair of Colt logo and Rampant Colt marked checkered hard rubber grips and a blued magazine marked “CAL.38/COLT” on the base. The overall condition is very fine. The original finish is preserved. Bright, sharply rifled bore. Markings are sharp. Excellent action. The rear link pin is a replacement. Both grips are very fine with minimal visible wear.
