Colt Model Of 1911.U.S. Army .45ACP – 1918, BLACK ARMY, COLT MAG, vintage firearms
Description:
General Specs: Colt, 1918, .45ACP, 38oz., Barrel 5"
Serial Number: 587153
The John Browning-designed Colt 1911 needs little introduction. It is one of the most iconic pistols ever developed, having traveled the world and fought in numerous conflicts since its U.S. Army acceptance in 1911.
In 1918, at the height of the First World War, the U.S. military demanded an unprecedented increase in sidearm production. To meet these wartime quotas, Colt implemented several production shortcuts, including reduced polishing during manufacture. As a result, when the traditional Carbonia Blue finish was applied to these more roughly finished frames and slides, the oil-and-heat treatment produced a dull, nearly black appearance rather than the deep reflective blue seen on earlier commercial guns. Collectors have dubbed these wartime pistols “Black Army” models.
This Colt 1911 Black Army carries all the hallmarks of WWI production. The barrel bears the interlaced “HP” inspection and proof stamp of Colonel Frank Hosmer, while the frame is marked with the “G” Government production-order acceptance stamp. Barrel and frame are matching and entirely correct for the period, additionally the frame shows the characteristic scalloped machining cuts- please review the photographs. The guns condition is outstanding for a gun of this age, with the slide and frame retaining approximately 95% of its original finish, the barrel bore is very good with unbroken rifling. The gun is supplied with a Colt Two Tone magazine with lanyard loop.
What a great find, a historic firearm over 100 years old and still ready for some range time. Its overall look and feel is entirely consistent with pistols of this era; a righteous piece, and an honest example of a scarce and historically significant WWI combat arm.
