WORLD WAR II era Officer’s Sidearm with Provenance
Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Colt Model of 1911A1 U.S. Army Pistol with a U.S. Boyt Holster, made in 1941 in Hartford, Connecticut. This one belonged to Captain Edson Marshall Paradise (1916-1990). Edson received his B.S. in electrical Engineering from Purdue in 1940, having been in the Tau Epsilon Phi Jewish fraternity. His draft card from that year indicates that he was working for the Webster Company in Chicago, a maker of electronic components. Type from that period indicates that he was a Lieutenant circa March 1943, and he spent much of his service during World War II in the UK, where he married his wife. One somewhat humorous article quotes him while on a visit home on leave where he talks about the surprisingly good British morale despite having a very poor, highly rationed diet. Since he was stationed and working with the British and not encamped with the Americans he became used to eating fish and various types of game, including crow, to supplement their paltry issued rations.
John Moses Browning’s famous pistol was adopted by the U.S. government in 1911 and attained iconic status throughout both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and beyond. This one was made at the start of World War II. The Model 1911 series of pistols is one of the most successful small arms designs of the 20th century, and in all of modern warfare history, for that matter. The handgun has been produced in quantity in the United States, Argentina, and Norway (the latter two under license production as the M1914 and the M1927 respectively) and was fielded in both World Wars and many of the major and minor conflicts of the century, eventually becoming a commercial success. The Model 1911 continues service in many forms today and is still a favorite among sporting, security, and casual gun lovers all over the world.
