U.S. Military Colt 1911 / 1911A1 .45 Pistol
** Early Factory Blued Pistol **
Description: This is an interesting U.S. Military Colt 1911. This pistol started life in 1917 as a WW1 production Colt 1911, serial number 175585. It likely saw some service in World War 1 and remained in inventory, whether in an armory or with an enlisted soldier who remained in the service. Sometime in 1938 or later it still was in U.S. service and it was determined that it needed a new slide and barrel. The original slide was replaced with one of the spare/armorer's replacement slides in U.S. Army inventory. As you can see from the pictures, these spare slides were marked "M1911A1 U.S. Army" on the right side. As Clawson's Collector's Guide book explains, the spare slides were marked this way for identification of pistols previously made without the model designation on the receiver (serial numbers 1 thru 712349). These spare slides were made by Colt from August 15, 1938 to October of 1943. This particular pistol ended up with an early-production spare blued slide along with a High Standard "HS" & "P" lug-marked blued barrel. The firing pin stop is the early 1911 type, along with the front sight which is the "improved 1911" model, measuring a uniform .057" wide. The frame on this Colt remained almost unchanged except for the later 1911A1-style arched mainspring housing. The trigger, slide stop, thumb safety, grip safety, magazine release, hammer, and "diamond" checkered Walnut grips are all the original WW1 parts it left the Colt factory with in 1917. As you can see in the pictures, the gun has a very attractive, clean, and even look to it. The original factory blue finishes are all mainly intact with only some minor areas of finish wear. The bore is in superb condition, with strong rifling and no pitting. The original grips are in excellent shape with no cracks, chips, or repairs. Everything on this Colt works perfectly and the slide moves smoothly by hand on the frame with no excessive play. The barrel locks up tight when in battery, and trigger is quite good. This Colt 1911 comes with one original 7-round WW2 contract magazine marked "S" on the top of the base plate lip. If you have been looking for an interesting and not often seen 1911 / 1911A1 variation for your collection, this Colt certainly qualifies.
