1849 UDC Colt
Description: The Union Defense Committee (UDC) was established directly after the attack on Fort Sumter at the outbreak of the Civil War in both Chicago and New York to facilitate the equipment and outfit of regiments of volunteer militia. Active aid was immediately put towards a variety of arms including handguns, shoulder arms and swords. The UDC aided the Union Navy with the steamship USS Quaker City and supplied it with a variety of arms in 1861 including 50 1849 Colts in the 203000 and 204000 ranges. All have the two line Hartford address and some combination of the following markings: Anchor on barrel, USN on backstrap, UDC on butt and P/GG (Guert Gansevoort, New York Navy Yard Inspector) on cylinder. No known guns have all four markings. This gun is SN#203682. It has no anchor on the barrel. It does have “USN” on the backstrap and “UDC” on the butt as well “PGG” on the cylinder. NOW here is what I think I have: I THINK this is an original 1849 Colt in the correct serial number range that has had bogus markings applied to make it a super rare and very valuable UDC model. The UDC and USN stamps MAY be original, but I don’t think so. The PGG on the cylinder is definitely not correct. The cylinder is deeply pitted and the serial number is not visible. In addition, I think the barrel has been replaced because it has a one-line address (I can’t make out the serial number). This is a good placeholder in your collection (that will fool many collectors!) until you’re lucky enough to locate an original which will probably cost $6-10K).
