This Colt D.A. 38 New Army is a historic double-action revolver, part of the Colt New Army and Navy series (often referred to as the Model 1892 or its variants like the 1894/1901/1903), chambered in .38 Long Colt. Introduced in the early 1890s and serving as the first U.S. Military issue revolver with a swing-out cylinder for rapid reloading it represented a significant advancement over single-action designs like the Colt Single Action Army. Typically featuring a 6" barrel, blued finish and walnut grips, this 6-shot revolver was adopted by the U.S.Army and Navy, with production spanning from 1892-to around 1907. While innovative in its mechanical design-including double action capability and simultaneous ejection-the .38 caliber cartridge proved underpowered in combat, particularly during the Philippine-American War, leading to its eventual replacement by more effective sidearms.
