Colt Model 1900
Calibre .38 Rimless Smokeless
Description: This is a unusal example of the first automatic pistol ever marketed and manufactured in the United States. It is a prototype recoil operated handgun designed by John Browning and licensed to Colt for production. Approximately 4274 of these early semi-auto pistols were manufactured by Colt from 1900 to 1903. Because it is truly a protoype handgun, numerous changes and variations in the firearm occured over it's production period. This is a three digit serial number gun, produced in 1900, the first year of production. This example is truly in collector/museum condition with a high lustre blued finish, fired blue screws and small parts and a case hardened hammer and front sight. Originally this gun was produced with a rear sight safety. Around serail number 2200-2450, Colt changed the rear sight safety to a fixed sight and offered to alter the original rear sight safety to fixed sights for all earlier guns. Any gun sent to Colt for the rear sight alteration was factory refinished by Colt. This gun was sent back to Colt for the rear sight conversion (and refinish). This unit is very unusual as the markings on the slide appear to be engraved, rather than roll stamped. The gun was part of the collection of John (Jake) Grady of Horsham, PA. Upon his death, his widow consigned the collection to us for public sale. When she later passed away, the estate found a few additonal pieces in the home and asked us to sell them as well. As such, I have no information, history or provenance on the offered pieces. The included magazine may well not be original since most of these were nickel plated, and this one is blued. Nonetheless, an absolutely gorgeous piece in exceptional condition.
