ENGRAVED/SILVER Mounted H.E. DIMICK Marked Antique Derringer Perc. Pistol
Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Famous Pistol
Description: ENGRAVED/SILVER Mounted H.E. DIMICK Marked Antique Derringer Perc. Pistol Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Famous Pistol Here we present an antique H.E. Dimick Marked Period Copy of Henry Deringer’s Percussion Pocket Pistol, made circa the late 1850s into the 1860s. This pistol has “H.E. DIMICK / ST. LOUIS” marked on the barrel flat. Dimick is one of 64 known copyists of the infamous pocket pistol. Horace E. Dimick’s shop manufactured this style of pistol the mid-19th century based on Henry Deringer's popular designs. Dimick sold a variety of firearms and frontier goods through his “Western Emporium” in St. Louis including pistols, rifles, and shotguns built by the 27 gunsmiths he employed. He was a direct competitor of the famous Hawken brothers, and his company is known to have supplied arms to many heading to the West. Dimick actually presented Brigham Young with a Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver and is also known to have armed Birge's Western Sharpshooters during the Civil War. The name “Deringer” often invokes certain historical event, characters or moments in film. Deringer’s name has become both a noun and a catch-all term. President Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed with one of Henry Deringer’s pocket sized percussion pistols, the night John Wilkes Booth revenged the South at the Ford Theater. They conjure images of the California Gold Rush, as well as riverboat gamblers. These pistols were very practical for the time, being small and concealable and of large bore size. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. Good wood with light handling wear. A split is present under the forend. A crack is found on the right side of the barrel tang. Legible markings. Lightly engraved with floral designs. Loose trigger plate finial. A hole is drilled into the lock plate. Chipped hammer head. “H.E. DIMICK & CO. ST. LOUIS MO” barrel markings are re-marked. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-1/4 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos.
