Description: FALSE BOOK-Cased Antique HENRY DERINGER of PHILADELPHIA .41 Caliber Pistol Exquisite Disguised Fitted Case with Accouterments! Here we present an engraved antique Henry Deringer Percussion Pistol in .41 Caliber, made circa the 1850s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, uniquely enclosed inside this book-type fitted case! This may not have necessarily been for the library shelf. Rather, it may have been more practical when traveling so that anyone giving a cursory look at your luggage or lap on the boat, stage, or train would not realize that you were armed. Henry Deringer founded his company in 1806 and invented what would become one of history's most famous pistols. The Deringer was popular because it was lightweight and compact. To compensate for its single-shot capacity, users often carried a pair that sold for around $25 total, including a custom calibrated bullet mold. The name “Deringer” often invokes certain historical event, characters or moments in film. Deringer’s name has become both a noun and a catch-all term. President Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed with one of Henry Deringer’s pocket sized percussion pistols, the night John Wilkes Booth revenged the South at the Ford Theater. They conjure images of the California Gold Rush, as well as riverboat gamblers. These pistols were very practical for the time, being small and concealable and of large bore size. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape. The book-case is lined in a lavender-colored velvet and has a “TG” inscribed silver plaque on the exterior. The entire set contains lead round balls, a ramrod, oiler, ball mold, Eley cap tin, small powder flask, and wood box for patches.
