Published and Identified Moore's Patent Deringer (5th Variation)
Description: Serial #1624, .41 RF, 2 1/2” barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome little pistol that has about 45-50% of the original silver plate finish remaining, mostly on the barrel, and an overall dull yellow-ochre patina on the frame where the underlying brass has been exposed. The floral scrollwork engraving is still crisp and clear, as are the small checkered panels along the curved, lobe-shaped grip. The hammer has muted original color case-hardening remaining with spots of darker freckling throughout, and the left side of the barrel has a name engraved in flowing script along the flat: “A. F. Watcell” (at some point the name was partially buffed off but is still legible nonetheless). The barrel lock-up is still very tight without any play in the latch, and the action is fully functional. Alex Franz Watcell was born in Ireland ca. 1842 and emigrated to the U.S. in November of 1865. He worked as a gardener for prominent New York banker Dewitt C. Hayes. Named deringers of this type are very rare and this pistol has a full page devoted to it (pg. 20) in “The Collecting of Deringers Manufactured by Moore, National, and Colt” by L.D. Eberhart and was once a part of Mr. Eberhart's personal collection. {Ref. “The Collecting of Deringers Manufactured by Moore, National, and Colt” by L.D. Eberhart; 2011} Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Moore Model: Deringer Serial Number: 1624 Caliber Info: .41 Cal Gauge Info: .41 Cal |
